Hi Speed Fan Only! No Wipers, No power window right side or rear, Oh my!
I have slowly been trying to get my old 87 back to (safe) drivable condition after letting it sit for a wile, the last registration said 2001. In any case I have in new brake lines and exhaust. New battery and its running. My short lists of electrical issues are…
No Wipers
Only high fan speed
Sticky power locks
Power Passenger and rear window
Well I actually got the wipers going. I pulled the motor assembly out and took it all apart, to find that the inside of the motor housing had rusted and the permanent magnets had come unbounded from the housing. When I pulled the stator out the magnets were stuck to it. I sanded the rust out of the housing and cleaned it and the magnets with alcohol. Then used some 5 min epoxy to rebound the magnets to the inside of the housing. And yes! It works.
Next I turned to the Blower, I had high speed so I pulled the blower resister to find the bottom terminal in the plug melted and the lower male connector broken off. Looks like this caused some arcing and the ensuing meltdown. With the factory connector toasted, I lopped it off and rewired with female push on connectors. I then drill a 1/8” hole through the resistor module by the broken off connection. I soldered a 4” wire to the coil support the old connection had linked to, pulled it through the hole and crimped on a male connector, plugged every thing together and… I still only had High speed. Next I jumper out the thermal fuse and that did it. All fan speeds working. I just need to change out the $1.49 thermal fuse. Anyone know or have an idea of the safe max temp in or around the resistor module? I see I can get the thermal fuse at Rat e O Shack. But the temp selection is pore. (128*, 288*, 422*) I think over 400 degrees is too high. The 288 is probably the best choice. What do you think? Any one know the value of that component?
I haven’t gotten past taking off the inside door panel on the passenger side so I have much work/fun ahead of me. Any of you guy’s have some tips on getting the motion back in the power window regulators?
Thanks for any info you share.
