View Full Version : Bronco Running Poor!!! Help!!!

Hey Guys,

Just got through doing my brakes, wheel bearings etc.. Took it out for a test drive, spun the truck around in the dirt, and it suddenly started idleing rough, and missing like crazy. I limped it home and parked it for the night. Then next morning fired it up and it was intermittent, would idle Ok, then begin to miss, Id rev it a bit, and it would be fine, then start to miss again..
Got frustrated parked it for a couple of days. Went back to work on it this morning, and it steady runs like crap, idles ruff, missing, and smokes when revved. First : my rear 4 cylinders are running cooler than the front 4 when i checked the exhaust mainfold(hoping to find one or two cylinders not firing) pulled 4 plugs out, 2 from the front 2 from the back, and 3 were sooty from gas (not oil deposits) 1 was actually pretty wet. Checked Cap and rotor for signs of damage, and checked for good spark (nice bright blue spark)... So engine is running rich as all hell, not sure why, in the next couple of days i will be investing in a code reader, but until then was hoping someone else has tackled this problem before, and could offer some advice as to where I should start..

BTW: Truck is an 87 w a 302, and I will appreciate all Input!!!!

Ok at this point im starting to guess Fuel Pressure Regulator as the culprit, seems to match symptoms if it was overpressuring... checked vacuum lines to it everything is as it should be. Anyone have experience with any of this????

Yea once before, FP regulator ended up popping a few of my injectors. You can possibily try to rent a high pressure fuel gauge to see what it's pumping out at I think it's supposed to be 45 but don't quote me on that.

Or you can just get a new Fuel regulator for about $18.00. I was having a problem on my 5.8 but it turned out to be the dam computer, as mine was backfiring and stalling, then it would start up in a couple of minutes or sometimes hours. It was weird.

Self Test - A technician that is unfamiliar with the EEC Self-Test can mistakenly believe that continuous Memory codes are not present when they really are. He may run KOER Self-Test and get a pass code (111) and not realize that KOEO Self-Test must be run to receive any Continuous Memory codes. He may run KOEO Self-Test while counting MIL flashes and misinterpret the repeated hard fault pass code (111) to mean that Continuous Memory does not contain any codes. The engine temperature must be greater than 50°F (10°C) to pass the KOEO Self-Test and greater than 180°F (82°C) to pass the KOER Self-Test. To accomplish this, the engine should be at normal operating temperature
