found out from a previous previous owner that the transmission has lost reverse. but i have a line on one from a guy in my volks club. i also picked up a gas tank, tail lights, door panels, and headlight switch from Dale, the same guy. i got the front turn signals and ignition switch and the rear seat bracket and panels free from the guy that owned this bug last year. originally he parted it out and sold it to Dale, who sold it to my other friend in the club Blake. and then he sold it to me since he already has 3 project bugs.
Dale is coming down to my house to have a "garage day" to help me straighten out the front drivers side quarter panel and a fender in a few weeks.
getting a lot done and slowly piecing it back together. pics of new stuff tomorrow when it gets light out

97F250HD Dude
03-29-2009, 05:23 PM
i am. a lot more done than i ever did on the '73. should have it on the road in the next week or so. i got promoted at work yesterday, i'm now crew lead for a new crew that will be running around doing property maintenance in denver, so that means i'll now have the $$$ to build up the 1914cc motor that i've been wanting for a while now.
97F250HD Dude
05-26-2009, 04:03 PM
its been a little while, but soon after finding out the transmission in it dosent have reverse i took a break from working on it. i have a good replacement trans for it, and the engine has its new exhaust and is ready to be put in too. put in a new brake master cylinder, got seats for it and am in the process of finding the last few parts i need to get it on the road. i dont have internet at home right now (using my girlfriends for now) so it may be a while before i post up again, but when i do i'll have pics for y'all.

hey guys i'm back. i got the engine in a few months ago, was getting ready to get it registered but cant seem to find the previous papers for the plates so i cant transfer them over yet.
about a month ago i came home from work to find a large green sticker on the front windshield. the park was threatening to tow it away cuz it has no plates. I towed to my grandparents house and its just been sitting there since. all i need to finish it is to swap the alt. out with a generator i got, get a positive batt. cable and a volt. regulator. should fire right up. then there are a few other things like tun signal switch and relays but other than that its near done.

11-27-2009, 09:11 PM
heat can be your friend when straightening up metal.
make a cheap frame machine...come-a-long, tree, short wood post, couple short chains and/or straps. small propane plumbing torch to apply heat to area. works really good- as I did it to a toyota I rebuilt (sure wish the scanner worked). have photos of the very basic/crude set up that got the front clip to within about 1/8th of perfect.
it only snows when its warm...
ok I don't really believe the last line either....but maybe you can fool yourself into thinking its nice out.

11-28-2009, 10:10 AM
well flat towing it home yesterday with a tow bar didnt quite work, front steering issues prevented it. so i just went and rented a car hauler from u haul to get it home.
97F250HD Dude
11-29-2009, 10:47 AM
trailer worked beautifully, got it home no prob. first thing i did was put in my new turn signal switch:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o313/93XJdude/IMG_1138.jpg
i had to unbolt the steering column to get the wiring thru the grommet into the trunk area. 1 side had the original nut spot welded to the body, the other side was just a nut and bolt, making it rather difficult to undo. so i fixed that the easiest way i could by just tacking the nut on:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o313/93XJdude/IMG_1140.jpg
before
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o313/93XJdude/IMG_1136.jpg
after all that i started fabbing up a bracket to hold the brake fluid resivoir.
this is what i ended up with after about 10 minutes of fiddling
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o313/93XJdude/IMG_1141.jpg
just used some angle from a table saw stand and tin snips to cut it into shape. just gotta finish cleaning away all rust and paint from the area then i'll be able to weld it in.

12-01-2009, 10:22 AM
pobably never haha. seriously it all depends on money and what kind of job i can get with a CDL. if i got the money then i can get it painted, lowered, motor built up, brand new interior, new wheels, tires, ect.... but to get it driveable, maybe tonight.

Yup, they were so old that the brake fluid rotted the rubber and they got swollen shut. only a little fluid was able to pass through it, explaining why i had such bad brakes on my test drive.
