Robby Gordon to pull Triple Duty in NASCAR and Baja
http://www.robbygordon.com/cms/uploads/trifecta.jpg
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (May 26, 2006) – Robby Gordon, who is widely regarded as the world’s most versatile race car driver, will put that reputation to the test once again next week when drives three different race cars in two countries on the same weekend.
Gordon will defend his title in the Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico, where he will drive two different vehicles, and will also drive his NASCAR Nextel Cup Series car in Dover, Del.
Having pulled the famed Indy-Charlotte double three times, Gordon is accustomed to the difficult travel logistics necessary to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, but the challenge of racing in the Baja 500 and Dover NASCAR races presents an even greater test.
The 37-year-old driver will travel approximately 11,200 miles by air during the odyssey (nearly half the distance around the world) and more than 1,100 miles on the ground.
Less than eight hours after the completion of Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, his journey will begin with his first cross-country flight to Ensenada where he will spend three days practicing (or pre-running) both a Red Bull/Toyo Tires-sponsored Chevrolet CK1500 Trophy Truck and a Jim Beam/Toyo Tires-sponsored Hummer H3. Gordon will make the 2,800-mile flight to Dover on Thursday evening before practicing and qualifying his Mapei and Menards-sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo Friday. Following Friday’s NASCAR sessions, he will again return to Ensenada where he will take the green flag in the Baja 500 at approximately 9 a.m. (PDT) Saturday.
He will start the Baja 500 in the Trophy Truck and drive approximately half of the race before turning the wheel over to his teammate Andy McMillin who will take the truck to the finish line (McMillin campaigns the Team Gordon truck full-time in the SCORE International Off-Road Series).
Shortly after Gordon starts the 500, his father, Bob, will start in the Hummer H3 where he will also drive half way and then turn the truck over to the younger Gordon who will in all likelihood complete the 424-mile course in the H3.
Immediately following the completion of the estimated seven-hour race, which begins and ends in Ensenada, Gordon will re-board his plane and take an overnight flight to Dover where he will start the Neighborhood Excellence 400 Sunday at 2:10 p.m. EDT.
“This is the sort of thing that I live for,” Gordon said. “Obviously my primary focus is on our Nextel Cup effort but when I have an opportunity to compete in our Trophy Truck I take it. On paper the travel logistics look tough, but when it’s over it really doesn’t seem like it was all that hard.
“The only thing different from last year is that we’re also driving the H3, which is the same truck we raced in the Dakar Rally in January. By running both trucks we’ll be able to put a lot of development miles on the H3 in preparation for the next Dakar, and we also hope to defend our title. The H3 has been a very reliable truck but it was built to conform to the rules of the Dakar Rally, and that’s the way we will race it in the 500, so it will be at a horsepower disadvantage to the unlimited horsepower Trophy Trucks. But my dad has still got what it takes to get the job done, and he doesn’t make many mistakes, and if the H3 is as reliable as it has been in the past we could win with either truck.”
Bob Gordon is himself a former Baja 1000 winner and for many has been affectionately known as “Baja Bob.”
“I’m looking forward to having my dad back in a Team Gordon truck, and I hope that Andy gets his first win in the Trophy Truck class. He’s a heck of a talent and if all goes well I expect to see him be the first to get back to Ensenada.
“The best thing about having such a long flight Saturday night back to Dover is that I’ll get to sleep on the plane the entire trip and be ready for 400 more miles on Sunday. Getting our team’s first win of the season there would put a topper on the whole weekend.”
Wow this dude stays Busy..
I cant help but wonder if he would get more sleep if he's win More?

Robby Gordon to Drive No. 88 Navy Chevrolet at Michigan and California
Monday, 14 August 2006
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (August 14, 2006) – JR Motorsports announced today that Robby Gordon will take the helm of the No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS for the NASCAR Busch Series events at Michigan International Speedway and California Speedway.
“We’re looking to improve our performance in the Busch Series, so we’ve been making changes to get to where we need to be,” said team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. “Martin (Truex Jr.) was a big help last week and we’re going to continue our due diligence with Robby Gordon this weekend in Michigan. He brings a ton of experience and will be able to relay some good feedback on our cars. Robby’s got more on his resume than any driver in the series, he’s raced in everything from the Indianapolis 500 to the Baja 1000, and I appreciate the fact that he’s willing to help JR Motorsports out.”
Gordon has one previous Busch Series start at each track and finished 12th in both races.
“The U.S. Navy is very proud to be associated with JR Motorsports. Martin really hung in there last week and acted as a sailor to get the job done,” said Senior Chief Jeff Priest, the Navy’s Motorsports Program Manager. “We are also looking forward to Robby’s performance this week and continue to support Dale Jr. and the team as we continue this season and next. It is an exciting time for the Navy and JR Motorsports.”

Kamikaze
By Dennis Terry
Late Thursday evening I got a call from our pit crew coach, Walt Smith. Robby Gordon was running the Busch race at Watkins Glen and needed a front tire changer at the last minute.
Because of the business relationship between Gordon, Menards and DEI the job was mine.
To be perfectly honest, I’ve never been a Robby Gordon fan. I’ve meet him several times and he’s a heck of a nice guy, but let’s face it, he’s got a pretty strong reputation of being a “weapon” on the track.
I was also somewhat apprehensive about sacrificing one of only six Saturdays that I have off between now and Thanksgiving, but knowing what an aggressive road racer Robby is, I knew we would either be running up front or tearing up a lot of race cars trying to get there.
So, I cleaned the condo, vacuumed, washed, folded and begged until finally my wife agreed to sign my Kitchen Pass for early release this weekend.
I packed my bags and headed to Watkins Glen Saturday morning to work the Busch race for Gordon and stayed over for my regular Cup duties with the BPS guys on Sunday.
It was a great race to say the least! One of the best road races that I can remember. Despite shifting problems late in the race Robby was still able to give Kurt Busch a run for his money right up to the last lap.
Robby’s “Kamikaze” move through the inner loop on the final lap was a prime example of a driver’s ability to dig down deep inside and find one last fight for victory.
Robby wasn’t going for the win to impress sponsors, to prove anything to his crew, or to collect a pay check. He was giving 110% because he knows that settling for second is no more fulfilling then settling for twenty second.
While this period of NASCAR will be remembered by private jets, exorbitant salaries, corporate control and drivers “cruising for cash” and begging for a hair brush before interviews. Drivers like Robby Gordon will be remembered for making driving the most exciting part of racing.

NBC Sports will air the November running of the 2006 SCORE Baja 500 & 1000 on Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 10.
Produced by Aura360, the one-hour specials hosted by Emmy Award winning sportscaster Al Trautwig will feature point-to-point coverage of the off-road races. The programs will focus on the top overall finishers and competitors in the 28 Pro and six Sportsman classes.
NASCAR fans will be sure to enjoy the coverage of November's legendary SCORE Baja 1000. The team of Robby Gordon and Andy McMillin captured the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory.
Gordon started the race and went about halfway down the peninsula before handing the truck over to McMillin, boarding a helicopter and then a jet to get to Miami for the NASCAR season finale. The duo's total time was second overall, at 19 hours, 15 minutes and 27 seconds, 54.41 mph. The win is Gordon's third in the Trophy Truck class in the Baja 1000.
This year's Baja 1000 had a race-record of 431 starters and 234 finishers from 38 states and 12 countries.
2006 SCORE Broadcast Schedule on NBC Sports
• SCORE Baja 500 -- Dec. 2, 2-3 p.m. ET
• SCORE Baja 1000 -- Dec. 10, 2:30-3:30 p.m. ET

Since then, he's raced Chevrolets in 182 events for Richard Childress (http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/rchildre00/cup/index.html), Larry McClure and in the last two years for himself.
All three of Gordon's career Cup victories came in Richard Childress Racing Chevrolets, but at the beginning of his career, Gordon was a Ford factory driver in family prepared off-road trucks and sports cars fielded by Roush Racing.
"I had a lot of success with Ford early in my career and I owe a lot to Ford," Gordon said. "I think our Nextel Cup program is at the point now where we're ready to take it to the next level."
Gordon said his team has already begun preparation of Ford racecars and would use powerplants from Roush/Yates Engines next season, but that he would not test any Fords himself until after the 2006 season, when his current relationship with General Motors in NASCAR ends.
Gordon said that he would also continue his Dakar Rally program, which uses the Hummer H3, as well as his Chevrolet off-road Trophy Truck team. The loyalty to multiple manufacturers is much like team owner Roger Penske, who fields Dodges in NASCAR, Honda-powered cars in the Indy Racing League and Porches in the American Le Mans Series.
"Ford has pledged its complete support of helping me realize my dream of winning a NASCAR championship as an owner/driver," Gordon said. "I believe my best days as a Nextel Cup driver are still in front of me and I also believe we have laid the groundwork for the expansion of our program."
Gordon said in a worst-case scenario he wanted his Nextel Cup team to be a two-car operation by 2008, and also said he planned to field Ford Fusions in the Busch Series, though he provided no details.
