i always thought it'd be cool to have something like that as a tow rig... it'd get you in/out of the dirt/sand road that lead to the off-road parks, and you wouldn't have to worry about the tent leaking...

I see no front drive shaft or axles? :6:

look again it has two! front drive shafts coming from some unknown box after the transfer case... and two differential "looking"cases by each wheel although the actuall differential mechanism is in the unknown box thing

As the picture shows its $2500.00

what are 6 lug chevy axles?
I know they're not One Tons?

If it was a one ton rig I could consider it. :humm_smilie:

But I need another project like a hole in my head.

Cam...

chevy 1/2 tons are 6 lug...like a Toyota. the chevy 3/4 & one tons are 8 lugs

might be a D44 up front- yes they were avail in 6 lugs...possibly a 10 bolt rear?
in any case that van as photo'd is a 1/2ton'er or a converted 3/4 ton shorty 2wd...Ford had some of those odd 3/4 ton shorty vans.

I'll have to scan some pics of my dads old van. He had a custom made 4x4 ford van with radius arms and coils. I only have pics of the instalation because He took a whole roll of pics at the desert but the people developing them screwed them up. Then it got stolen:12:

I don't think Chevy had a full size 4x4 1/2 ton in anything but 6 lug.

Thats a cool van but I'm not to fond of the bumpers. But where did he get it because the dealers don't sell 44 vans do they?

I forget the name of the company..
But Ford seems to have an established company that does the conversions for them.

Sorta like shelby or Roush...

This was my first van I built, it had a turbocharged 300 straight six, and tons of torque. The van rusted away, and I went to the diesel ambulance.:bye2:

I actually did own a '73 Dodge Van for a while & I loved it! :)
This aint my Van.. ( I found this one on Google )
http://www.carr.org/~gripper/images/vehicles/van.jpg
But mine was some what like it..

Yeah it was a plain boring 2WD Van...
But I must say what was most awsome about it was I could go party as much as I wanted anywhere I wanted & if I should'nt of been driving I'd just take a nap in back on my couch till I sober'ed up. :)

Makes me sorta consider getting another one.. :humm_smilie:

My wife talked me into buying ours. She wanted to be able to pile kids and friends in and still be able to pull her horses around. But I've gotta say I love the thing! I pull more stuff with it than I do with my dually.

Great Thread guys....I used to run the front counter at a 4x4 shop that used to build 8-10 4x4 vans a year in BC....we had customers from coast to coast, Canada and the states. This was before Quigley got into it...Ford from the States was sending us customers....we used 95% ford parts that you could find on the shelf anywhere...it made trying to find replacement parts a lot easier. We used TTB on the fords, but straight axle on the chevies...the Chev and Dodge are more work because there is not as much of a frame there as the Fords. Here is the old website that we had....

Does the IFS just bolt up like it does on the 80-96 F-150's?

For the most part, yes. The center pivot mounts and transfer case mounts were custom made...we would make 10 sets at a time on a jig. Heck, I think even the radius arm brackets were F150 ones if I remember correctly. The transfer case mount itselft was a stock style F150 mount, but the steel mount was custom.

The driveshafts were custom length of course, but used regular size truck parts. The transfer case was brand new BW1356 with a factory shift light that we installed in the dash...used handle and linkages though, just repainted. We rebuilt the TTB units...all new bearings, gears, axles, etc....Stock F150 coils, calipers etc. We had a lifted version that used Rancho 3" lift coils and different brackets.

We tried to use as many factory style parts as possible so that if a customer needed new ball joints, radius arm bushings or something years down the road, they could walk into their local auto parts store. We also supplied a list of all part numbers with each conversion.

We used all urethane bushings, Rancho shocks and top of the line name brand parts. Most conversions started out at about the $8000 mark, with the Chevy and Dodge conversions costing around $12,000.

We did a lot of custom work on the vans...roof racks, winches, lockers etc. We did a lot of ambulances and used the solid axle dana 60 on coils and some 8 lug dana 50 TTB.

Gud Racing

Were the Dana 50's coil too? If so what arms did you use on those? Custom?

bigbroncojeff
02-08-2008, 04:15 PM
cool... i have always noticed there were tons more ford 4x4 vans than the others... that sums up why

offroadaction
02-08-2008, 05:30 PM
Dana50's were leaf spring...we did not do many of them...only when the customer could not be sold into a solid axle dana 60. The majority of the 60's were leaf spring as well, although we did a few custom ones with coils.
