Still in the Running for Unlimited Class 1 Series Championship after Baja 500
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – June 8, 2006 - All German Motorsports (AGM) posted a heroic run for the Score International Baja 500 off-road race, held on June 2-4, 2006 in Baja California, Mexico. In spite of debilitating mechanical problems that delayed the car for hours, the drivers Martin Christensen and Dave Mason recovered so well that they were able to finish in 14th place in the Unlimited Class 1 series. AGM is now in the top 5 point position overall in their class, and with three more races to go, team AGM is still in prime position to win the Score International 2006 Series Championship.
“We had an amazing start, managing to pass more than 15 cars in the first 40 miles of the race, and we were in a leading position until our clutch disintegrated,” said driver and co-owner of AGM, Martin Christensen. “We started prepping the car to replace the clutch while we were waiting for the pit crew to reach us . . . but due to the remote off-road desert location it took three hours to get the parts and make the repair. Because of the long delay, we decided to revise our race strategy and instead of aggressively pursuing time results, we focused on finishing the race securely,” Christensen continued.
Prior to the Baja 500, AGM was in a third point position in the series and racing to win this year’s class championship -- as they have done previously in 1998, 2002 and 2003 in class 9 and 10.
Only 17 cars out of 36 Unlimited Class 1 starters managed to finish the race. The SCORE International off-road racing series is one of the most challenging and grueling racing circuits in the world. Drivers from numerous other series, such as NASCAR and CART, come to race in the SCORE Series to test their abilities in the most challenging and rugged of off-road environments.
“Aside from our mechanical challenge at the 40-mile mark, the car drove fantastic,” said Christensen. “Of course we’re disappointed as we planned to win this race, but as we all know – anything can happen in the Baja 500. Fortunately for us, the winning team is the one that is consistently capable of handling all obstacles in all the races,” Christensen continued.
AGM is very encouraged with their current positioning and is confident about their chances of taking the championship series. They are convinced that the combination of superior equipment, the most competitive and consistent drivers and a technically strong and motivated team is the recipe for victory at the end of the season.
AGM has a team of 40 volunteers supporting their racing efforts. “Off-road racing is a team sport, and we’re very fortunate to have the strongest and most technically experienced team in the SCORE International Series,” said Dave Mason, driver and co-owner of AGM.
AGM races a Jimco 2 Seat BMW M5 powered car. This powerful car stands out in its class dominated by American engines and has garnered the respect and attention of the various off-road fans, spectators and competitors alike.
