Home work.....

Not been super active here lately as I've been beat working on the house. Not really by choice, but because its been in need of some repair and freshening up.

Most recently and currently, its been the roof. With 3 layers of asphalt shingles already installed, (and I'm discovering the last layer was done incorrectly) I am having to strip it down to the deck and start fresh. Its fun. In between rain and super gusty wind, and now the current closing of the dump road, progress has been slow. THIS is good. I'm not as fit and used to it as I once was...so I get a recovery period between sides. I have only one more side on the house and the garage left to tackle.
While I'm in a forced wait to do the final side, I am starting on the new gutter system. The old stuff was full of holes that I am tired of trying to plug every year and wanted to change the flow while adding one more downspout anyway.
Houses are a lot like car projects. One thing leads to another. Quickly. Last years garage door install led to a new driveway, which in turn led to a new front step/porch/deck. The winter inside project was the living room. Just to keep winter boredom at bay. This year is not any different. The roof had to be done after the winter we had and the pieces of roofing I picked out of the yard. That led to gutters, and I'm being 'encouraged' to paint the house also. After all it really needs it about 10 years ago....and I don't have anything else to do in my spare time. :6:

Honestly, I'm thankful I'm healthy enough to do this to a place I'm blessed enough to have while having enough funding to do it. I even am blessed enough to have some help from my dad so I don't have to do it all by myself.
I'll work on a few photos of the projects to post here sometime tonight I suppose.

I had hoped to bring a few updates to other projects of the vehicular variety, but that is the way life goes I guess.

Where you getting all this money for so many projects?!?!?!!

locopny 04-25-2017 07:35 PM

Porn.

hahaha

nope not really. Buy materials long before I need them and at great sale prices and out of bargain piles... Also shop at bargain centers like Habitat For Humanity. My labor is "free". Not to say its all paid for, but its a lot cheaper than what some average shmuck would have to pay for the same thing.
I do ok buying and selling....usually. I think I have said elsewhere....no kids, no wife, no child support, no alimony, no legal bills, I stay out of bars, don't gamble, don't smoke, don't do drugs. So what $$ the government decides I don't need to live on I get to spend improving the property so my estate might have enough to break even on my final expenses.
Wait, I said I don't gamble....but farming is a gamble when you think about it....some years a guy does ok to make up for the years that weren't so good. Hope its a good year this year. Tonight we are expected to get some snow, it shouldn't be around long at all, but it really is hard to take when it was near 70* on Friday/Sat. Amazing how quick you get acclimated to the warm. Today was hovering around 33* and windy most of the day. In Jan, 33* feels like a heat wave. Today its bone chilling.

Ah the same places you normally buy tires! :4:

Been gathering the materials for the roof over the last 2 years. And for over 3 years on the next roof I have to do. Saving about 2/3's the normal price. Stored it in the Quonset at the farm until I was ready to do them (or when nature said it was time).
Paint....I got for $10/gallon of good Sherwin-Williams paint all due to someone having ordered too much of a certain color. I would not have necessarily chosen that color, but for the price...its my favorite. What do I care, as long as it protects the siding and its not obscenely obnoxious, most any color would have been fine. Its basically a neutral color that goes with the roof color in great contrast that looks acceptable.
It helps to go into the projects without being narrow in the color or styles you have to have.

If I were getting money from porn I imagine I'd have just bought it and not cared about price.

Still working on the last side of the gutter. I have the important sides done so its all good until I can wrap it up.

As of this post, I am about 90% done with my entryway. Just cut and installed the new trim, and Tuesday I installed the new flooring...(I had it for about 9 years waiting). I splurged and installed a wood ceiling and small crown in there. I just have some caulking and touch up paint to be DONE. This project probably didn't cost me more than $200 and looks like $1000. or more? took out a closet that was worthless and opened it up for better flow from outside. Doesn't feel so tight when you walk through now.
Yeah I'll get a photo pretty soon.

Yes I know I've been slacking in the photo dept. I will work on it shortly.
I'm sooo close to being done with so many projects I can almost taste it. Garage only needs gutters hung, and soffit tin installed--can be done when cold if needed. House just needs the last of gutter finished, trim in the entry way installed (just varnished it 2 days ago) and the baseboards installed in the living room. Then all the touch up painting from oops....

Aside from one more large roof project at another house....I think I will not do anymore roofs. I may direct some young willing to learn kids. Really don't care for the super steep stuff anymore. Yeah, I bought a fall prevention kit on this one.

locopny 08-16-2017 08:38 PM

Back at working on yet another house. The one with that big @ss roof....like 3000sqft. Ive gotten 400 sqft done and am working on the next big step--extending the carport roof and replacing windows that I bought awhile back. Thank God I bought this stuff when I had more $$. I really need to unload a tractor or two.
With the rain finally hitting us here, progress is slowed to doing as much prep as possible so when it quits for a day I can strip it and weather it in as a minimum. Trying to get all the "easy" stuff done while I'm fresh. Mostly because it is the bulk of the square footage in roofing. The steep side is still not what I'm looking forward to but I do have a full harness and a pair of roof jacks to assist my progress.
Had to buy a memory stick so I could have room to take photos of my progress...there is no room on the computer as I need to upgrade the memory in the machine to run better. and remove a bunch of photos from here too.

Blanco 08-16-2017 08:46 PM

Wow!
How long before the rainy season hits your area?
Thats a BIG job!

locopny 08-16-2017 09:36 PM

well the rain is sorta here now. took too long on other projects to get to the big roof earlier. Rain hit late for the crops....but maybe they will rebound some. I doubt it though. I just get to be creative in my attempt to get it done before it gets too cold to tackle it all. I do have a few good sized tarps I can make an awning to let me work in the rain if it gets close. For now, I wait it out.....bobbing and weaving to get to the next round you could say. I really ought to have a small crew to assist....but no one around here is competent enough to do this that isn't already working somewhere for someone. I don't have time to teach Roofing 101. I need a clone of me. or a son. or a daughter. I get some help from Dad on this one...but its steep and not super safe...so I prefer to keep him on other projects. I'll get it all done I'm sure as long as I stay at it and am safe doing it.

bought another memory stick to download all my pictures to and be able to take some more. Home early due to rain....but I did get weathered in on 1/2 of the garage and carport. Still have some I can do in the rain but I've been pushing to get it done. Sunday is supposed to be nice through Thursday. That means more roofing. Really want to get back to car projects. Tomorrow its off to Menards to order some more windows while they are on sale. Then I can have all the upstairs windows done.
Still hoping for a decent crop...or I may have to sell a couple more things off. May get lucky to have a chance for something to bale at the end of the year. Not holding my breath though.
