Haying season 2016

Well I'm officially an active farmer now....I started my haying season with the purchase of a sickle mower and a baler. I will be borrowing a rake until they decide if they will sell it to me. Got my required top cut along the roadway done by the deadline of July 1. But with the issues of an old mower I just got the rest of the acreage mowed today....slightly wet. Cuts. Like. Cr@p! But its done and I have a lot of experience on this activity now. No expert, but I'm learning. Hope the rest goes as well as the first part. Small squares here I come. Hope its before the next weather pattern hits. Have some yard clean up to do before winter...scrap hauling, and an unloading dock to build from repurposed old driveway concrete.

well the rake works pretty good....hopefully So will the baler. will try it out Thurs. as a first run. watched some youtube stuff so I have a faint idea of what I'm doing. Never run or adjusted a baler before....I've only stacked bales. Wish me luck.....I think I'm gonna need it.

All my equipment is OLD....like me. AND its gonna be HOOTTTT when I bale. so early to start the learning curve.
Will try for some photos...atleast of the equipt.

Well I put up about 175 bales today. by myself. ended up getting a different baler than what I started with as the knotter assembly was goofed up. I went about 300+ miles RT to get the new baler...and brought it home on the GN-(the longest trip I have hauled it). Long drive with that on there. Drive chain broke Sunday when I took it out to try it for making a bale....got it fixed with a new chain this morning and was spitting out bales by about 10am I suppose. First few were really loose and had the operator error look to them...but I got better as I went.
I'm flipping sore. But they are mostly all stacked on pallets and awaiting to be covered up by the house in case its awhile before they are gone. I may not have to advertise these for sale as I'm getting asked about my bales and what I'm going to do with them.

way WAY too long a day to even consider taking photos....but my gal did take some video Or photos I think. She had never seen the process in progress before so she came out with her smart phone...I guess the even make phone calls.

Why is it your bailing hey anyways?

How big of fields you got?
You got animals to eat it or selling it?

I needed to cut the top cut of the ditch by july 1. I couldn't get anyone to do it for me so I figured if I cut it why not bale it too. spending fuel to cut it only to lay there and rot? No critters to feed it to, so I will sell it off.
Although I found out that word is out I have small squares avail.
Was cranking out 3' bales while getting it set up for tension and checking knotters...and never changed out length of bale. learning curve.

today its rained around an inch and a half, glad I was done.

forgot....no real field for haying. just a half mile ditch and the yard (might equal 4 acres?) never actually figured it out.

this would take more than a goat. And I dislike critters as a source of income. Just don't like being tied down to them with the care. Crops are more forgiving but at the mercy of nature to survive.

well I'll be selling one of my balers as I don't need two. I'll sell the first one I bought as it makes larger bales. The smaller ones are big enough for me especially when I step in a badger hole while lifting them into the bucket. Back feels so great now as does my ankle.

Pretty sure I just sold off all the hay I did. and there will be some more in a month or so. Not going to recoup all my expenses in making hay this year but maybe next year it will start to get me in the "black".

16.5' x one half mile is an acre. I'll estimate atleast 40' x one half mile for the ditch, and then the yard to answer an earlier question. Maybe it gets closer to 5 acres of haying land.

Sold around 100 bales Thursday. have 70+ left plus the next cutting in a couple weeks.

no. but for a first cut and first time....not too bad all things considered.

Hope by next year to have the equipment paid for. and start to cover all the fuel and such that goes into it.

Will not get in the black this year on this endeavor....wont happen until about this time next year for the hay I think...

but seeing there was no fines for not having it done, I'm ahead of the game at this point really.

winter is coming quickly it would seem. Been spending much of my time not on here (internet) almost have the shop ready for when it gets cold.

Uploading some photos tonight so I can post my haying experience this year. around half of my hay is sold and the rest may go on Monday or Tuesday.

Corn is getting harvested or done this weekend. so operations for the farm should be done before Thanksgiving....with machine prep and such.
